Episode 10

Where They Go

I really struggled writing my intro to this episode. I think that’s because this story, while quiet in many ways, has a lot of things going on.

However, I did start it with one premise: What if your life passed you by? What if, for some reason, everything you worked hard for, all the plans you had for your future were snatched away?

We all have that fear in one way or the other. But what if you had an opportunity to actually see it? To jump forward and watch the result of such a thing? Maybe it’s jumping ahead to see the one that got away and their new family. Or maybe see someone else excelling at the promotion you didn’t have the guts to advocate for yourself.

But that’s not only it. There are people who have quite literally been taken away from their lives. Kidnapped or held hostage or wrongfully sent to prison. And the lucky ones may some day get to come back home. But it’s not always the perfect reunion they and their families deserve. Because when we go, life must go on. And rarely does someone fit back perfectly into the spot that was left behind.

In many ways, isn’t that what trauma is? It steals from you. It takes things away from you that you can never get back. Whether it’s a lost childhood, death, you name it—you long for the time before the trauma happened, but you can’t erase what transpired. You can’t reverse the clock.

We can try and start over. We can try and “fix” ourselves. But, there is one thing that we can never get back, one thing that can never be replaced: Time.
